Slashing the money paid to injured soldiers.
Two injured servicemen could have their compensation payouts slashed following a ruling by appeal judges today.
The Court of Appeal has upheld, in part, a challenge by the MoD to awards made to Light Dragoon Anthony Duncan and Royal Marine Matthew McWilliams.
Earlier this year, the court heard legal argument to clarify the principles under which the armed forces compensation scheme should be administered.
As a result of today's decision, the two cases will go back to a compensation tribunal for reconsideration.
If ministers are successful, Cpl Duncan and Marine McWilliams' payouts could be slashed and future payments limited for other combat victims.
At the time of the hearing in July, Defence Secretary Bob Ainsworth announced a review of the scheme would be speeded up, although the court's consideration of its current legal effect would continue.
Cpl Duncan was originally awarded £9,250, which was increased to £46,000 by the tribunal, and Marine McWilliams's £8,250 award was increased to £28,750.
The 27-year-old corporal was shot in Iraq in 2005 and overcame two years of rehabilitation to ship out in April this year with his Light Dragoons colleagues to fight in Afghanistan for six months.

Defence Secretary Bob Ainsworth parliamentary aide has resigned over Afghanistan, it was confirmed tonight.
In a letter to Gordon Brown, former army Major Eric Joyce called on the Prime Minister to make it clear to the British people that the Afghanistan campaign was 'time limited'.
He said the public would not accept for 'much longer that our losses can be justified by simply referring to the risk of greater terrorism on our streets'.
Mr Joyce, parliamentary private secretary to Mr Ainsworth, was critical of Government policy in Afghanistan and called for a reduction in the British commitment.
He said Labour would not win the next General Election until it got a 'grip' on defence and demanded an exit strategy from Afghanistan during the next Parliament.
He revealed that he had told his boss a number of weeks ago that he intended to resign and now was the 'least disruptive' time to go.
'I do not think the British people will support the physical risk to our servicemen and women unless they can be given confidence that Afghanistan's government has been properly elected and has a clear intent to deal with the corruption there which has continued unabated in recent years.'

His visit is intended to promote Building Britain's Future, a Government plan unveiled by Gordon Brown to work with the public to "build a stronger, fairer and more prosperous country."

Although its not a fairer and more prosperous country for the soldiers who are getting their benefits cut under New Labour.

Badly wounded soldiers have had their disability benefits secretly slashed by as much as half by penny-pinching bosses at the Ministry of Defence.

Troops whose working lives are cut short after injuries sustained while fighting will no longer be paid a special £57-a-week allowance.

The move came after the MoD quietly dropped the benefit for new claimants who are too disabled to work.

It means hundreds of troops who have been injured in Afghanistan and in future conflicts will be £3,000-a-year worse off.
Around 12,000 veterans receive the allowance. But from April the rules have been changed so that those whose injuries leave them unable to work are not entitled to the benefit.

Critics called the cuts 'morally indefensible' when combat casualty rates are at a record high, and accused ministers of trying to save cash through 'invisible' cuts targeting hard-up wounded veterans.

Defence Secretary Bob Ainsworth already faces fierce criticism for his Appeal Court battle to try to reduce compensation payments to severely wounded troops.

And figures show 279 injured troops and veterans are having to fight legal appeals in the hope of more generous compensation settlements.

The benefit payments at the centre of the latest row are known as the Allowance for Lower Standard of Occupation (ALSO).

The cash helps them pay for basic essentials and stay above the poverty line as they struggle to cope with psychiatric as well as physical wounds.

Bob "the knob" Ainsworth has done it again as a story breaks about the MOD losing stuff.

It transpires today that nearly £7 billion of military equipment has gone missing from Ministry of Defence.

Un-believable, well with Bob running show sadly not.

The National Audit Office has refused to sign off on MoD records that £6.6 billion of assets exist because of “inadequate levels of evidence”.

The assets include about a sixth of all vehicles, weapons and radios used by British forces and are equivalent in value to the entire annual defence equipment budget.

The items in question include £1.25 billion of equipment deployed with British forces, such as machine guns, night vision goggles, encrypted radios and body armour.

Defence officials were unable to account for £350 million worth of fighting vehicles that were in theory being used for training and operations.

The remaining £5 billion of assets that could not be accounted for were predominantly raw materials and spare parts, ranging from bolts and oil to jet engines and propellers.

The MoD insisted last night that the equipment was “never physically lost” and that the NAO figure was an “extrapolation” from its audit.

It said that at the time of the report, the Defence Storage and Distribution Agency, which is responsible for supplying the armed forces, was unable to satisfy the NAO’s demand for paperwork to verify the assets.

So billions worth of kit has gone, or the paperwork has buggered off. Either way its not on the front line with the troops and no doubt Bob "the knob" Ainsworth has an excuse.

Hat tip to Dazed & Confused. This is why I am letting rip in Bob and his government policy. It has transpired that a young Marine is fighting to have his compensation increased as a result of injury he received in Afghanistan.

Marine Ben McBean, of 40 Commando Royal Marines, lost an arm and a leg in a landmine explosion while on routine patrol in Helmand Province in February last year.

He also suffered multiple shrapnel wounds and burns that have scarred his body.

The Ministry of Defence had offered the 22-year-old compensation for only eight of his injuries - and for six of those he was awarded the minimum tariff.

Bob Ainsworth's home repairs cost the taxpayer £5,925! Bob "the knob" Ainsworth, the Armed Forces Minister, claimed nearly £6,000 for the redecoration of his designated second home, submitting bills that included rebuilding the fireplace and fitting oak beams into his ceiling.

I wonder how much body armour that would have provided?

Bob "the knob" Ainsworth, the MP for Coventry North East, also tried to claim £2,225 for a sofa and £1,000 for a LCD Samsung television, both of which were reduced by the fees office.

In April 2006, Mr Ainsworth submitted a further £951 bill for fencing and in August charged £1,160 for a gas fire.

That same year, he was told by officials he could not claim £1,000 for a Samsung LCD television because he had exceeded the “recommended maximum”.

In August, the minister wrote to the fees office to explain why he was claiming £2,225 for a Roma corner sofa.

He said: “If you feel this is excessive can I say that due to size and layout of the room a normal three-piece suite will not fit. This 'corner group’ fits perfectly and maximises the space.”

In February 2007, Mr Ainsworth claimed £2,000 to re-point part of the property and two months later submitted a third claim for fencing worth £4,500.
